MONUMORABILIA
POSSIBLE RESEARCH QUESTIONS, I WOULD LIKE TO EXPLORE THIS SEMESTER:
REFINED RESEARCH QUESTION:
I'm thinking something along the lines of
WHAT CAN THE LACK OF A COMMEMORATING MONUMENT LOOK LIKE?
WHAT CAN THE LACK OF A COMMEMORATING MONUMENT FEEL LIKE?

Opinion formed sth like:
THE LACK OF A COMMEMORATING MONUMENT CAN HAVE A NEGATIVE IMPACT
ON A COMMUNITY, BOTH CONSCIOUS AND UNCONSCIOUS/UNNOTICED

Who/which side of the story is in power to commission them / How does it shape the cultural memory / What's the difference between monuments that clearly depict and remember an event, in contrast to the ones that are so abstract, that they function more as a purely decorative public item (and what do those "take away"/stand in for) / What can the absence of a monument mean for people / Where’s the line between commemorating the past and dwelling on the past / etc.
pre midterm question pad // brainstorming
Research question as clear as it can be
☁ WHAT CAN THE LACK OF A COMMEMORATING MONUMENT FEEL LIKE AND DO TO A COMMUNITY?

How will we go about it? // Everyone presents a schedule
☁ 18. - 31. Okt (when I'm in Austria):
research a bunch, conduct interviews, so that I can go ahead at the stations when I'm back
☁ More specific schedule will follow

What are the most important resources?
☁ interviews, videos, testemonials, books, museum installations, existing monuments, articles & internet
☁ my mini but never ending, hardly touched, kringloop history(/&)art books collection library
☁ Acelor fucking Mittal

What do you think you'll make?
☁ MAIN goal: 1 memorial for serb concentration camps in bosnia in the 90s
(though, this could be my graduation project maybe, and that for the minor I experiment, and make:)
☁ several different (small prototype) monuments, for different topics, different events
> maybe not all physically, but just design them? (though it would be nice to proto-finalize some)

Material experiment, methods etc.
☁ I hope to use as many school machines/stations as possible in my final year
(So ceramics, lasercutting, maybe woodworking, textile/sewing machines, maybe embroidery machine, mayyyybe metal station (hard, but would be fitting), maybe experiment with mosaiqing
But the material will be based on the art piece and what fits to it, so that will be decided individually for each piece when the time comes
THINK THROUGH THE FORM IN WHICH YOU MIGHT WANT TO USE TO PUBLISH YOUR RESULTS. WILL IT BE A COMPENDIUM OF INTERVIEWS, PUBLICATION, NEWSLETTER, ETC.
☁ For now: publication booklet, "background/further info on Monumorabilia", incl
> Interviews
> Statistics (+ visualization of)
> Selected parts of the glossary, or whole glossary?
> List of readings (articles, books), List of videos, CATEGORIZED per page
☁ Could function as a small "bite sized extra infos" booklet (placed next to graduation project f.e.)
> balanced mix of text and images, nice in the hand
> fun to experiment with binding, maybe handsewing, nice structures
☁ Form might change during process (if I find sth more fitting or specific f.e.)

HOW DOES THE INTERVIEWEE INFLUENCE THE CONTEXT OF YOUR CHOSEN QUESTION?
☁ broadens my topic of commemorating themes, gives it a more general, yet also even more personal note (f.e. when interviewing non bosnians/balkans)
☁ process of consciousness raising

WILL YOUR COLLECTED STATISTICS + INTERVIEWS ETC. BECOME A NEW WORK,
AND IF SO WHAT FORM WILL IT TAKE?
☁ complementary, I guess (hope)?
☁ The visualizations from statistics + glossary might form a new work (maybe a zine for the glossary)
PRACTICE
THEORY
STARTING POINT OF THE RESEARCH (conc. camps in Prijedor, BiH) in videos
long version & two short versions of al jazeera segment
memoirs of an inmate who wrote the book "Tenth circle of hell" about it
footage by British reporters which lead to international discovery of the camps
footage of the "white house" (but in 2011, there is no footage of it in 1992)
in it's way the place all this research for me started
footage of the commemorating day 2021, the day of anecdote 2
